GIER57

GIER57 proposes the reconversion of a former industrial building hidden in the inner courtyard of a dense Altbau block in Charlottenburg. These backyard workshops, once the productive heart of the Berlin block, are today rare witnesses of its mixed history. The project keeps the robust brick volume and reads it as a courtyard house, reached through the sequence of front building, passage and garden.

The facade is reorganised with a calm grid of openings in which new arched windows and deep loggias recall the original industrial vocabulary. Ivy-covered firewalls, a sloping garden and a lightweight glazed roof complete the setting. At night the interiors glow through the thick masonry, revealing living spaces of generous height and depth. The intervention shows how the hidden layers of the city can be turned into housing with a strong identity.
