Building on what is already there.

Berlin is an existing city.

Much of its future architecture will not be built on empty sites, but within structures that are already there. For us, this is one of the most relevant tasks facing architecture today.

Existing buildings contain history, material and spatial qualities, but often also structural, technical, energy-related or functional limitations.

Our work begins by understanding these different layers and establishing what can remain before deciding what needs to change.

This approach leads to conversions, extensions and renovations in which old and new do not necessarily need to compete with one another.

Sometimes the intervention is clearly visible. Sometimes it is almost imperceptible.

What matters is that the building works better afterwards — spatially, technically and for the people who use it.
