Structure, fire safety, escape routes, building classification, setback requirements, heritage protection, conservation areas, building services and the existing construction need to be considered together from an early stage.

The objective is not simply to maximise additional floor area. An extension also changes the identity and proportions of the existing building.

Roofscape, façade rhythm, materiality and the new plans are therefore developed as one architectural problem.
